Geisinger Health System Program

History

Geisinger Medical Center is a 500+ bed hospital serving as the hub of a 10-hospital health care system in central Pennsylvania and as a tertiary care center for referrals from hospitals outside of the Geisinger system. There is a growing need for surgeons who can assess painful hip and knee replacements and offer nonoperative and operative care to these patients, many of whom find it difficult to travel to Philadelphia or Baltimore where this care has traditionally been available.
The Geisinger Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship is an ACGME-accredited one-per-year, one-year program at Geisinger Medical Center that provides training for general surgery residency graduates planning careers in Colon and Rectal surgery. The fellowship has been in existence since 2019 and achieved ACGME accreditation in 2021. To date, all our graduating fellows have successfully completed the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery Examination.

The fellowship in Colon and Rectal surgery is a comprehensive and intensive program during which fellows will be expected to:

• Develop into a fully autonomous and independent Colon and Rectal surgeon who will provide excellent, safe, and compassionate care upon entering the workforce
• Attain competence and confidence in the evaluation, operative treatment, and non-operative management of patients with disorders of colon, rectum, and anus.
• Establish a pattern of continuous self-learning and inquiry into the field of Colon and Rectal Surgery that allows for ongoing delivery of advanced care.
• Develop a sense of professionalism that will allow their patients and colleagues to develop trust in their medical expertise and regard them as leaders in the care of patients with colon and rectal disease.
• Upon completion of the Colon and Rectal surgery fellowship, have all the clinical education and experience needed to prepare themselves for certification by the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery
